Why this petition matters

Started by Shantanu Paranjape

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, commonly known as Swatantryaveer Savarkar was a fearless freedom fighter, social reformer, writer, dramatist, poet, historian, political leader and philosopher.

He remains largely unknown to the masses because of the vicious propaganda against him and misunderstanding around him that has been created over several decades.

Yesterday in a debate on local Marathi news channel on the occasion of Commemorative i.e. on 28th May 2019, an effort was made to defame Savarkar by giving the title to the debate as  "Savarkar, a hero and a villain?." By adding the question mark to the end of it, that channel created a huge outrage among the Savarkar followers. (https://bitlylink.com/ncdq0

In line with that outrage, this petition has been created against such media channels and personnel who always try to malign the image of Veer Savarkar.

To those, who are still unaware of the great things done by Veer Savarkar, the following are few facts -

  • Savarkar was against foreign goods and propagated the idea of Swadeshi. In 1905, he burnt all the foreign goods in a bonfire on Dussehra.
  • Savarkar championed atheism and rationality and also disapproved orthodox Hindu belief. In fact, he even dismissed cow worship as superstitious.
  • In his book, The History of the war of Indian Independence, Savarkar wrote about the guerilla warfare tricks used in 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. While the book was banned by Britishers, Madama Bhikaji Cama published the book in Netherlands, Germany and France, which eventually reached many Indian revolutionaries.
  • Savarkar was arrested in 1909 on charges of plotting an armed revolt against the Morle-Minto reform. He also tried to escape by diving in the water but was arrested. He was sentenced to two life sentences i.e. 50 years in the cellular jail of Andamans, also known as Kala Pani, in 1911.
  • Though Savarkar was released in 1924 under strict conditions of not participating in politics for 5 years, he decided to work on the abolishment of untouchability in Ratnagiri. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar also compared his work to Lord Buddha.
  • in the year 1970, under the leadership of Ms Indira Gandhi of the Indian national congress party, the government released a postal stamp to honour the work of Veer Savarkar.
