Why this petition matters

Started by Steve Bassett

With the DVSA announcing MOT amnesty for 6 months, we’re calling for more support for Independent Garages to reflect this significant change.

The Independent sector that’s made up of small garages across the UK carries out 80% of the UK’s 30 million MOT tests each year. For these independent, sometimes family-owned companies, MOT tests are the foundation to how they operate as a business.

All support that has been offered so far is geared around 3 months which will mean that for an additional 3 months independent garages will be facing severe business disruption. The impact of this will be felt across the UK, extending through to the supply chain and resulting in widespread business closures and job losses.

Beyond this, the 6-month amnesty may result in vehicles being on the road that are not in a road-worthy condition. This is a problem that the DVSA and DFT need to urgently address as this is the key reason why MOTs are a crucial part of owning a safe and reliable vehicle.

Local independent garages are relied on by millions of people and play an important role in the community. A survey* in 2018 found that 70% of motorists prefer to use independent garages for their car motoring needs. They are a key part of the motor trade and of everyday life. Offering MOTs, roadside rescues and urgent repairs to keep people moving. It’s crucial that in such a challenging time small businesses such as independent garages are supported.

The 6-month MOT amnesty could have a long-lasting and severe impact on the independent garage network across the UK. The IGA has already voiced concern over this since the announcement last week but an update has yet to be provided by the Government.

By signing this petition, you can help raise this critical issue to relevant Government authorities. It’s crucial to ensure that all garages can continue to operate and not face the distressing situation of closing shop for good.

Thanks for your support.
