Stop the Nastiness: Improve the Way Politics is Conducted
Why this petition matters
The scenes we have witnessed on the floor of the House of Commons have to stop.
This is not just about one debate, It’s about the way parliament is run. Take Prime Minister’s Questions, every week we see some politicians shout, boo and jeer at each other. This is no way to discuss or solve issues of national and international importance. This is no way to run a country.
These behaviours wouldn’t be allowed in school or college or work. They shouldn’t be allowed in parliament and what’s more lots of MPs agree with us.
We need our politics to be conducted professionally and respectfully. That’s why Compassion in Politics - who want to make politics kinder and more inclusive - worked with young people from RECLAIM on a Code of Conduct that we want MPs to all agree to.
This would ensure that MPs must:
- Not use violent or de-humanising language or name-calling
- Commit to showing each other, the public and their staff respect
- Put the interests of the public first, prioritise healing division, and help engage more people in politics
We are calling on the Speaker and the authorities of the House of commons to introduce this Code of Conduct as soon as possible and to dramatically reform the way debates are conducted. Please sign so that they know just how many people agree with us.
Many people are put off going into politics because of the way it is conducted. Let's modernise and professionalise our parliamentary procedures and make politics more inclusive, respectful and compassionate.
Please sign our petition to make politics a place of respect, honesty, and dignity.
Thank you.
