We, the family of Danny Ray Thomas, are writing this petition on behalf of Danny Ray Thomas to Sherriff Ed Gonzalez and Harris County Board of Commissioners; Rodney Ellis, Adrian Garcia, Steve Radack, and R. Jack Cagle.

We are calling for the immediate firing of Officer Cameron Brewer for failing to follow the correct policy protocol when firing a lethal weapon upon Danny Ray Thomas. On Thursday, March 22nd, 2018, Officer Cameron Brewer negligently shot Danny Ray Thomas at point-blank range. Officer Cameron Brewer did not attempt to use any physical restraint tactics, pepper spray, or to use his taser at any point in his interaction with Danny Ray Thomas that lasted only twenty-four seconds. All of these options are less lethal than Officer Cameron Brewer’s first and only choice, one shot to the chest of Danny Ray Thomas. Officer Cameron Brewer failed to follow public policy protocol by failing to exhaust all other options before firing his weapon. As of July 22nd, 2020, Officer Cameron Brewer has been recommended to be reinstated by the Harris County, Texas Civil Service Commission and is again serving as a law enforcement officer.

At the time of the incident, Danny Ray Thomas was experiencing a mental episode and meant no harm to anyone. After the death of Danny Ray Thomas’ five & seven-year-old children at the hands of their own mother, Danny Ray Thomas was left struggling immensely to maintain his mental health. At times after his children’s deaths, Thomas would have very bad days where he would fall into a depressive state after having heavy thoughts of his wife and their two children. Unfortunately, March 22nd, 2020 was one of his very bad days filled with heavy thoughts. Officer Cameron Brewer was driving past Danny Ray Thomas who was knocking on car windows. Danny Ray Thomas posed no threat to Officer Cameron Brewer especially taking into account Danny Ray Thomas had his pants around his ankles and could not run in a threatening manner towards Officer Cameron Brewer. Instead of attempting to help Danny Ray Thomas during his mental episode, Officer Cameron Brewer took the life of someone who simply needed help. It took a total of twenty-four seconds for Officer Cameron Brewer to arrive on the scene and fire the single shot that took Danny Ray Thomas’ life. The only charge that Officer Cameron Brewer received was Aggravated Assault by a Public Servant. After less than an hour of deliberation, Officer Cameron Brewer was not convicted, and as of Wednesday, July 22nd, 2020 Officer Cameron Brewer was recommended to be reinstated. 

Officer Cameron Brewer does not deserve to be in uniform patrolling the streets. He needs to be fired immediately and never entrusted with the duties of a law enforcement officer again. Please sign this petition to have Officer Cameron Brewer off of our streets.
