In light of the recent removal of the Confederate monuments in Birmingham, AL, the standing Confederate monuments on UA's campus are brought to one's attention. The Confederate monuments on the University of Alabama's campus are a constant reminder of the University of Alabama's racist history and founding. The Confederacy stood for slavery, racism, and white supremacy, and this is not something that should be honored at the University of Alabama in 2020. Enslaved people built the University of Alabama, and the monuments dedicated to those who were forced to create an educational institution designed to exclude them are far outnumbered by those for Confederate soldiers. History cannot be erased, nor should it be forgotten, but we should not honor those who fought for immoral values. The University of Alabama often claims that it has committed itself to "diversity, equity, and inclusion" but these memorials only remind students that UA was never built on these values. Dr. Stuart Bell claims that "Our University.... must be a beacon of hope, equality and inclusivity"; he should back his rhetoric with action and stop honoring those who stood for ideals that contradict these values. This is something people have been fighting for for many years, and it is time that UA follows. The two remaining monuments on UA's campus include the large rock in front of Gorgas library, as well as the stained glass window housed in Hoole's special collections library (which was commissioned by the Daughters of the Confederacy).
