Why this petition matters

Started by CAMPAIGN FOR DEMOCRATIC AND COMMUNITY RIGHTS (CDCR)

We of the above-named association consisting of residents of communities in Ogun state respectfully use this medium to call on the government of Ogun State to, as a matter of urgency, to address the menace of horrible and unmotorable roads in Ifo Local Government of the state which has now being compounded by heavy rainfall on a daily basis.

During the 2019 general elections, we can recall how on your visit to our communities you were so much touched by the backward conditions in which previous administrations had left us that you promised to prioritize the construction of our roads and provisions of other basic amenities like public schools and health care. But for more than a year now, we are yet to see any visible effort to begin to address these problems which are a matter of life and death for residents of our communities.

While not unmindful of the several demands on your good offices especially at this time, we passionately demand the completion the 32-kilometre Sango/Akute/Ajuwon/Ojodu-Abiodun road project which was started by the immediate-past administration of Ibikunle Amosun but has been in a state of abandon ever since. As a result, residents of Ope Ilu, Olambe, Giwa, Oke Aro, Matogun and other communities in that axis have been subjected to agonising hardship on a daily basis while plying this route.

To save cost and ensure that quality job is done, we demand that the project be completed through public works programme because of the enormous corruption and wastage of public resources associated with contract system. In most cases, money that should be adequate to construct 10 different roads is often wasted on one because of the fraudulent nature of the contract system. Apart from the 32 kilometre road, there are countless other roads and drainages in our communities that we would like your administration to help us fix. It will therefore not be in our interest if money is wasted in such a manner, hence our demand.

We call on the government to set up a well-funded public works department under workers democratic control and management that will be responsible for road and project construction under which workers and youth will be employed on a permanent basis. This pro-people arrangement will drastically reduce the cost of construction, it will enable the construction of more roads and projects and it will eliminate corrupt practises.

We also demand that immediate efforts be put into motion to begin to address other issues of bad roads, absence of drainages, erosion, flooding, inadequate public schools and health care facilities in our communities.
Thank you sir in anticipation of a favourable response,

Yours,

Comrade Khadijat Usman (Mamakofoshi) Comrade Gbenga Bello
