The No Sanctions on Iran Coalition (March 2021):

We are writing this open letter to express our unequivocal opposition to the unethical, unjust, and deadly U.S. Sanctions on the Iranian people. As many policy experts and human rights groups have argued, sanctions are ineffective policy tools that neither result in nonproliferation, nor end human rights abuses.

Sanctions violate basic human rights by weaponizing medicine, increasing poverty, and reducing access to food and clean water. Sanctions have polluted the environment, destroying the habitat and driving animals and plants into extinction. Sanctions have increased poverty, harming the most vulnerable Iranian people: children, working class women, Afghan-Iranian refugees, working class queer and trans people, the elderly, houseless people, and people suffering from illnesses such as cancer, epilepsy, and diabetes. Sanctions have caused a humanitarian crisis, making access to life-saving medicine extremely difficult, if not impossible. Last but not least, sanctions have contributed to the suppression of movements for social and economic justice, jeopardizing civil society in Iran.

The U.S sanctions on Iran are war by another name. They harm ordinary people and only benefit war and sanctions profiteers. Sanctions are collective punishment. UNICEF has documented that over 500,000 Iraqi children died as a direct result of the U.S. sanctions on Iraq. It is time that we learn from past catastrophic mistakes.

As academics, activists, artists, musicians, human rights defenders, community organizers, journalists, policy workers, healthcare professionals, and social justice advocates in the U.S. and worldwide, we urge the Biden administration to lift the sanctions on the Iranian people immediately, and to end the unnecessary suffering and death of the Iranian population. We demand that the governments of Iran and the United States move swiftly towards negotiations and reach an equitable agreement before more Iranian lives are expended as the direct result of sanctions. We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and demand an end to the U.S. sanctions on Iran NOW!
