Why this petition matters

Started by Emma Gurjal

Millions of people watch movies every day, but many of the movies we watch have problems with racial representation.  We want to make our world more racially diverse. We really want to prove that the old stereotypes about people of color are incorrect. Even though we’re young, we are strong and most importantly, we have a dream. We believe that everyone should be treated equally, in both movies and in real life.

You might have realized that most movies have white main characters, and only people of other races as secondary characters, or bad people/villains. Even worse, movies might not even acknowledge other races at all.

This is a big problem and it's important that people care that movies give white people  an advantage and make people of color look bad, evil, and rude. One of the worst parts is that some people don’t even notice or care. This could lead to biases against people of color. We want everyone to be able to watch a movie and think, "That important character is just like me." We also want movies to be unfamiliar for people so they can learn new things and new lifestyles. The problem is that people of color have to see those unfamiliar things too much. They rarely get to see things that are like themselves.

We want there to be more movie producers,  writers, and directors of color so there will be more movies about people of color.  Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream was to have equality. We're just trying to make that dream come true. We need everyone to be seen as equals in movies, so we can have a world that respects everyone, even in reasonably tiny ways, like movie entertainment.

Hollywood, it’s time for you to hire A LOT more movie producers,  writers, and directors  of color!
