Why this petition matters

Started by UP Baguio University Student Council

While the recent approval of all appeals for the exemption in giving a numeric grade is nothing short of a victory for the UP community, our fight for compassionate education has a long way to go.

We are geared towards lifting academic requirements in the duration of the community quarantine. #NoStudentLeftBehind means lifting academic requirements as well. The call to lift academic requirements bears the very same reasons we have been against online classes during the pandemic in the first place. What the students ask for is an educational environment conducive for learning; we cannot learn whilst we are worrying about the issues that surround and affect us. We continue to reiterate the need of legitimate and practical medical solutions before we can continue with classes and requirements. Opening schools without proper health measures will only endanger the lives of students and teachers. The government must urgently take the essential medical measures to control the spread of the virus. Only in that instance can we finally address other matters of importance, including education.

Whether it is the majority or the minority of students who do not have access to devices and the internet, and students in economic distress or in a mental health crisis, these are enough reasons to lift academic requirements in the middle of a pandemic. In fact, we have put into consideration how the UP Diliman Executive Committee has requested the BOR to allow faculty to give a grade of “P” to students this semester. In addition, some of the faculty members in UP Baguio opted out to give “P” marks to their students and lift their academic requirements as well - these are good examples of a compassionate education.

We appeal to the UP Baguio Administration to heed to the call of our students, especially in these trying times. We acknowledge that the university has been of great service to our students in the time of a pandemic, however, we believe that lifting academic requirements would aid students further.

This petition will be submitted to the Office of the Chancellor in hopes that the UPB Administration will consider our propositions considering the current public health crisis.
