Local Renewable Energy Now
Local Renewable Energy Now
Why this petition matters
The purpose of this petition is to request that members of the NYS Public Service Commission approve a “regulatory sandbox” in which Brooklyn Microgrid (BMG) participants can operate and demonstrate the positive effects that a peer-to-peer energy marketplace can have on the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
The earth’s climate is changing. Polar ice caps are melting, temperatures are increasing worldwide, and superstorms are becoming common occurrences. Like the rest of the planet, New York City is moving closer and closer to an environmental crisis caused by carbon emitting energy sources.
Additionally, in recent weeks, NYC has been subjected to multiple power outages affecting more than 120,000 people throughout the city. Nursing homes, adult care facilities, and other organizations that service our most vulnerable citizens are severely affected by unreliable power.
ConEd has warned that due to the city’s aging electrical grid, the aforementioned changes in climate, and an ever-growing demand for electricity due to the growing use of air conditioners and other power hungry electronics, blackouts are likely to become a more frequent occurrence and part of New Yorkers’ daily lives.
Things don’t have to be this way though. There is a solution. Brooklyn Microgrid (BMG) is a startup that is creating a peer-to-peer energy marketplace. BMG is working to create a platform that will allow people to sell and buy locally generated, renewable energy to/from their neighbors. People who have solar panels on the roofs of their brownstones, apartment buildings, or businesses will be able to share the excess energy they generate with residents in their neighborhood. The BMG peer-to-peer energy marketplace will provide locally generated, carbon-free electricity and help alleviate the grid reliability problems ConEd is facing.
If you are a motivated citizen who wants to DO SOMETHING to create a more stable and sustainable future for yourself, your children, and your grandchildren, take action! Follow the link below to SIGN THIS PETITION and forward it to other people in your network for them to sign.
Signing this petition is a concrete action step towards telling Mr. Rhodes and the NYS Public Service Commission that it’s time to flip the switch and allow Brooklyn Microgrid to assist ConEd in providing locally generated, renewable energy in NYC.
