Protect Cayman’s reefs from construction & development damage
Protect Cayman’s reefs from construction & development damage
Why this petition matters
Help protect Grand Cayman’s precious marine park from development pollution and damage.
Recent photos of underwater debris and reef damage near FIN Residences have shocked local residents. This has now been brought to the attention of FIN and Crighton Properties - and they have acted swiftly and said they will clear it up, immediately, working with Dept of Environment & hiring divers who will return weekly to survey the reef and surrounding area and clear up/monitor as needed. We thank them for this prompt, helpful response.
We now ask for a public meeting with the developers of FIN Grand Cayman to address urgent ongoing public concerns about environmental damage and risks to the irreplaceable and precious marine park as we approach the storm season.
The FIN building appears to be perilously close to the iron shore edge, at risk from wave action. Silt from iron shore drilling risks smothering local marine park corals. Creating an artificial beach risks further imperiling marine life by introducing organic material and other contamination - whenever the waves rise or a powerful wind blows, the beach will be lost to the sea.
Local businesses, local people need to have commitment and accountability now from FIN development team, and to have their concerns and questions answered.
We ask FIN to publicly promise to undertake to do everything it has been advised to do to safeguard the reef and water quality, by environmental experts including the Cayman Islands Department of Environment
to ensure no silt or debris will fall into the sea
to protect and preserve the reef and marine park
and to be the environmental champions they promise to be on their marketing website.
We believe dialogue between the community and the developers will be invaluable in addressing concerns, and help us all work together successfully to protect and preserve the wonderful natural beauty of Cayman. We support a public meeting to discuss this.
