Protect The Rustington Allotment Foxes from wildlife crime
Protect The Rustington Allotment Foxes from wildlife crime
Why this petition matters
Over the last few weeks there have been multiple attempts to kill foxes on and around the Rustington allotments. Rags soaked in toxic chemicals were placed in and around a fox den and into a garden bordering onto the allotment. An illegally snared and badly injured vixen was rescued one mile down from the allotments. On top of this two foxes - one cub and then later one adult were killed in the most horrific manner and their disfigured bodies were found by allotment holders at the Conbar Avenue allotments.
The killings were reported to the council and police and were logged. But so far no official crime reference numbers have been issued and no formal crime investigation has been launched. Based on the Wild Mammal Protection Act from 1986, these fox killings are wildlife crimes and the killer needs to be found and held accountable for their barbaric acts.
Fox Guardians would like to monitor the site with trail cameras for the foxes safety but we are not allowed as on public land. The ground keeper of the allotments was told by the council to remove any cameras if found. The floral tribute we left for the foxes were discarded. I am saddened by this because as the Fox Guardians founder, it is my mission in life to inspire respect and compassion for foxes and support vulnerable foxes any way I can.
We request:
- Sussex Police to start a formal investigation into the two unlawful fox killings, including door to door questioning
- Rustington Parish Council to install CCTV on the allotments
- Rustington Parish Council to inform all allotment holders how to deal with the discovery of a dead fox on site, so that any evidence relevant for an investigation is being preserved
We would like to work with the council and the police and are offering our services free of charge. Please cooperate so together we may end these horrific fox killings and the fear these have instilled into many local residents and allotment holders who deeply care for the foxes .
The allotments are a wonderful community space to be shared and enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike. Let's do all we can to restore the peace on the land so that humans and foxes can live once again without fear and in harmony. Together we can rally around these vulnerable foxes and be their voice.
