Why this petition matters

Started by Sonny Bailey

The new study 'Spectrum 10k' is being described as the largest study of autism in the UK and its aim is "to investigate factors that contribute to autism and related conditions to better understand wellbeing in autistic people.” It states that it opposes a cure or any form of eugenics. Unfortunately, the organisers behind this study have direct links to organisations that advocate for cures and eugenics. For decades, the autism community has stood against this type of research, because it causes unnecessary harm and results in a lack of access, support, and understanding. There is a link to some statistics which support the premise that the majority of us do not want a cure for autism.  https://autisticnotweird.com/2018survey/

The aim is questionable at best, because this does not state how exactly it will make autistic people's lives better. There is research out there being led by autistic people which make it clear what would make our lives better. This inculdes unemployment, social inclusion, healthcare, housing, education, community support and many more. Thus, research based on genetic and environmental factors does not provide a pathway to accessibility and inclusion.

The study asks for DNA samples. When mishandled this creates a situation in which data could fall into the wrong hands. Future researchers given access to this data could use it for development of cures, pre-natal screening and harmful practices such as ABA. The study has not consulted autistic people, but has instead been marketed towards parents of autistic people and professionals. The media has been silent about our concerns. Nothing about us without us.

Please sign the petition to show that you support autistic people and prevent this study from being released to the public.
