Defund the Berkeley Police Department
Defund the Berkeley Police Department
Why this petition matters
We call on the City of Berkeley to divest from the police and invest in life-affirming institutions!
We know the Berkeley Police, like police across the US, terrorize and enact harm on Black people every day. More officers, guns, jails, and prisons do not solve racial dispairties, injustice and police violence. We cannot solve the problems inherent to policing by funding the police.
The current proposed City of Berkeley budget for 2021 alocates 43% ($74 million) of Berkeley's general fund to the police department. The City of Berkeley is expected to finalize its budget for 2021 by the end of June 2020.
We demand our elected officials divest resources away from policing and reallocate those resources to social services, access to food, healthcare, housing, education, parks, jobs, youth programs, restorative justice, and mental health workers. We demand a budget that supports community wellbeing.
