Why this petition matters

Started by J Brown

This petition is started to request that the SC Senate repeal the Heritage Act started in 2000 which states that no Public Confederate Monuments or flags etc can be removed. This Heritage Act requires a 2/3 vote from members of the SC State Senate to currently remove these Confederate Monuments.

City and Local leaders DO NOT have the authority to remove any Confederate monuments in the State of SC as a result of the Heritage Act of 2000.

It is important that as many people as possible sign this petition to let these Senators know that it is time for the Heritage Act to be repealed. Your signature has  power to influence their decision.

By repealing the Heritage Act, state leaders will put the authority to make decisions on whether to remove these symbols of hate back in the hands of local government.

This petition is twofold.

1. It is requesting that the Heritage Act be repealed so that a 2/3 vote by the State Legislators is not needed to remove Confederate monuments in the State of South Carolina.

2. This petition is specially making SC State Legislators aware of the fact that we are requesting that the two public Confederate monuments located in Abbeville, SC be taken down and REMOVED from the city.

Furthermore, by signing this petition we are serving Mayor Freeman the Mayor of Abbeville and Blake Stone, Abbeville City Manager and the Abbeville City Counsel notice that; Confederate monuments in Abbeville, South Carolina located on PUBLIC property are symbols of hate and slavery.

They were not erected as memorials to the Civil War which the South LOST. Rather, they were  placed as a means of intimidating African Americans and reaffirming   white supremacy during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights era. The public Confederate monuments in Abbeville, SC are long overdue to be taken down! We demand that these public monuments are taken down as soon as the Heritage act is repealed.

Please let's stand together and make our voices heard by signing and sharing this petition. It will be brought to the attention of these State legislators and Local Leaders. It is our hope that the Heritage Act will be repealed.

Only then can we move forward together to see these symbols of hate come down. Thank you for joining with us to make this a reality. Please consider sharing this petition with others via your social media.

The Confederate monuments in Abbeville, South Carolina on public property are:

1. Abbeville Confederate Monument (1906)

2. First Secession meeting Columns Monument (1927).

Please let's work together to get the Heritage Act repealed and these and other symbols of hate in Abbeville, SC taken down.

Many petitions such as this one are being circulated; asking that the Heritage Act be repealed. However, this petition takes it a step further by  specifically requesting that the two public Confederate monuments in Abbeville, SC be taken down as well.

Thank you for your support.
