Why this petition matters

Started by Climate Change Committee

Climate Change. An issue that is affecting our lives this very moment, an issue that has been deemed "too political", and an issue that has been neglected for far too long. Scott Morrison, the current prime minister of Australia recently hit headlines as he angrily condemned a national student strike for climate change inaction, quote "Kids should go to school". Yes. Kids should go to school, to study and learn. But why are we studying for a future we won't even have? Why do we continue to sit in a classroom learning facts in Geography about the climate crisis, why so we study History in order to prevent past mistakes, why do we learn how to speak with confidence in English, and why do we investigate ways in which global warming can be avoided in Science? Yet after all you have taught us, we are silenced when we speak up for a future you are stealing right in front of our eyes. You still continue to shield us from your faults, you still continue to ignore an issue that will one day be the extinction of humanity, and you still prioritize our education over the planet that we stand on. We are the first generation to understand that we are destroying the world and the last to be able to do something about it. If we continue to live on this planet like we have another one to go to, and if we continue to accept that change won't happen, it will be the downfall of the human race. How many more species have to become extinct, how many more trees have to be cut down, and how many more fossil fuels will be burned for you to speak up?

So I ask you again, will you sit in a classroom learning and studying for a future that is being stolen, or will you finally stand up for what you stand on?

Our petition is to raise awareness for the climate crisis, and for students to actively contribute towards a better future, in regards to supporting environmental activism in schools.
