Why this petition matters

Petition to the New South Wales Parliament - Save the Darling River from the over - allocation of Water to irrigation.

To the Honourable Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of NSW. This petition brings to the attention of the house that:

  • The excessive issue of water licences and water allocations being drawn from the river systems in Queensland and northern NSW by various industries and people has led directly to little to no flow of water down the Darling River particularly the large area south of Bourke..
  • Downstream communities, businesses, farmers, and the environment and people are suffering even to the point of dying. This river is in dire straits and is very sick.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative  Assembly of NSW to:

  1. Take control of the issue and eliminate the overtaking of water from the river and reduce the amount of water taken for irrigation, ect. under the licences or from over pumping from the Darling River and its tributaries, to a level relative to the whole of the river taking into consideration the current flow and the whole river environment and needs and restore surface flows for the river to be returned to a healthy viable state.
  2. The construction of the Wentworth to Broken Hill water pipeline will further impede the recovery of the darling river. the pipeline should be stopped.
