Why this petition matters

Started by Doc Searls

Twenty years ago, The Cluetrain Manifesto said "we are not seats or eyeballs or end users or consumers. we are human beings and our reach exceeds your grasp. deal with it."

Since then their reach has mostly exceeded our grasp. The results are what Brett Frischmann and Evan Selinger call re-engineering humanity and Shoshana Zuboff calls surveillance capitalism.

The final straw on the back of privacy's camel is facial recognition by surveillance systems—including the kind we can't help using on our own phones.

Time to start dealing.

We can start, at the very least, by signing this petition.

We can push facial recognition tech companies identifying us to governments, and to each other—and from stripping away our natural anonymity when we going about our private business in the world. That includes times when we are just walking down the street, or in and out of buildings.

We can push technology developers to give each of us ways to guard our personal privacy, and to signal our privacy preferences to others. We've had those in the physical world for as long as we've used the privacy technologies called clothing and shelter. Time for the same in the digital world.

We need governments to encourage those developments as well— but please not with laws that reduce us to mere "users," "data subjects," or "consumers."

We are people, and our privacy needs full respect.

By signing this petition, each of us is saying three things.

  1. Get Out of My Face (#GOOMF)
  2. Quit staring at my naked self
  3. Help me get some clothing and shelter here.

We've gone naked too long here.
