Hyperbaric O2 Trials for Covid-19
Hyperbaric O2 Trials for Covid-19
Why this petition matters
Start clinical trials of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for COVID-19
We request the Government support an immediate clinical trial to see if Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy could save the lives of COVID-19 patients, either by supporting a UK trial, supplying funding to speed up trials currently organised overseas, or preferably both, to enable a fast and conclusive result.
HBOT could radically reduce COVID-19 fatalities. Most COVID-19 patients sick enough to need ventilation currently die. The cause is multiple organ failure through chronic hypoxia. The lungs cannot absorb enough oxygen to keep them alive, even on a ventilator.
Tests suggest breathing oxygen under pressure could both enable them to take in sufficient oxygen to stay alive, and suppress the inflammation of the lungs, letting them recover without ventilation. Initial case studies have met with success and thorough clinical trials are needed now.
This could be a game-changer in COVID-19 treatment, avoiding the current high fatalties and lung damage, being scaled up using currently inactive airliners as pressure chambers, and enabling treatment in areas of the world with little medical infrastructure. We need to know if it will fulfil its promise. any day's delay will mean the difference between thousands of lives saved or lost worldwide.
Hyperbaric chambers, pressurised aircraft have been offered and suitably trained volunteers are avaliable and offering to help. We now need the go-ahead and a proper organisational framework in which to proceed.
