Why this petition matters

Started by Tim Shanahan

Princess Sally Acorn, Nicole the Hologram, Bunnie Rabbot, Antione DeCoolete, Rotor the Walrus, and all these other non-game characters from the Sonic franchise don't have a home anymore! They need you're help!

Original post: (11/25/17):

On July 19th Sega announced the end of their partnership with Archie Comics. On October 9th IDW publishing, the new publisher of the Sonic comics, announced that they will be "starting fresh". Meaning that they will do a hard reboot, thus putting an official end to the longest running licensed comic of all time. Despite the fact that the fans wanted this series to continue and that there was already a reboot that occurred in 2013.

When asked about the fate of one of the key staples of the comics, Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters of Knothole. They responded by saying "Stay Tuned". While this response doesn't really mean "no", it doesn't really mean "yes" either. If anything this shows that IDW is still not certain on what direction they will take this series in and considering how Sega treats their material that is not in their main games, we shouldn't just wait around and do nothing.

If our voices are not loud enough, these characters could disappear forever! since they are unable to progress in the sonic franchise these days for some unclear reason.

Sega may see these characters as meaningless names and drawings, but to us they are family. Especially since most of these characters ( Sally, Antione, Rotor, and Uncle Chuck) debuted way back in 1992 with the release of issue #0, meaning that they pre-date most of the game characters like Knuckles the Echidna (1994) and Amy Rose (1993). Let alone the fact that these characters have very unique qualities that make them stand out amongst other characters in this franchise.

It would be a betrayal to the legacy of the Sonic franchise and the fans of these characters if they are not given a home as mainstays in the IDW series.

Only you can help us save these characters from a medialess limbo.

Update (9/5/2018):

Ten in a half months later after posting this on November 25th 2017. A lot has happened involving both the information on these characters and were certain companies and people stand on them.

First some good news. We have become the most signed Sonic themed petition on Change.org. Beating the petitions like the classic Sonic petition, and the petition that tried to green light Sonic Adventure 3. Also, both IDW and Sega has made it clear that they acknowledge the demand for these characters to return multiple times and they have even stated that the door is still open to them making a come back. Meaning that they are indeed not ruling them out of the franchise like many fans feared they would (though it is possible that this petition might have played a role in that).

But that brings us to the bad news. Unfortunately there is one thing stopping these characters from returning to the main IDW Sonic comics, and that is the man who was once credited for being the writer who "saved them", Ian Flynn. There have been various sources from that have researched this possibility, and the evidence is just too great to ignore. Especially since he has gone out of his way to backpedal on a previous statement by saying that Sega didn't own the characters, despite that a simple look through any of Sega's legally owned martial in the public records of the United States copyright office would prove otherwise. Let alone that he stated Sticks the Badger can come in despite being from a branch of the Sonic franchise similar to where the Freedom Fighters are from. And considering the large amounts of control he has been given over the book resulting in the questionable level of quality the IDW Sonic series has so far, It isn't very suppressing that this petition has been rather slow these past four months.

But thankfully, Sega's mind set has become far more open in the recent years. From including the once obscure Mighty and Ray in both Sonic Mania and it's animated stream show, to Having modern Sonic games contain Western Sonic features like Sonic Forces adapting a similar setting to the fan favorite TV show, Sonic Satam. Plus according to a couple of our fellow supporters, IDW are considering making other Sonic comics based on other branches of the franchise, and have already begun hiring other writers. So IDW has thankfully provided other ways to for Sally and her crew to return to comics as well.

That is why, as of typing this, This petition will expand it's course a bit to focus more  on bringing the Freedom Fighters into other media, not just comics. Because as long as Ian Flynn is in control of IDW's main book, we will continue to have slow progress and The Freedom Fighters will never be given their proper come back. Thus we are now focused on brining these characters back in full force. Remember, you can still help save these characters from a medialess limbo.

Let's show Sega just how much the community wants these characters back.
