End San Francisco’s Garbage Monopoly

Under the 1932 Refuse Collection and Disposal Initiative Ordinance, the City and County of San Francisco is required to award a sole source contract to one company to collect San Francisco’s garbage.  San Franciscans pay higher rates than all 20 peninsula cities’ residents. We need to end the monopoly by requiring the garbage contract to be competitively bid like other California cities do.  This will make the process fair.  It’ll lower our rates and bring relief to long-suffering San Franciscans.

We the undersigned demand the Mayor and Board of Supervisors demonstrate leadership by doing three things:

1.    Reduce garbage rates to the 2017 levels immediately.

2.    End the monopoly.

3.    Create a competitive bidding process to award the garbage contract including recycling.
