Why this petition matters

Started by TRIBLY DSOUZA

Why is it that in most cases, only a woman changes surname after marriage?

This petition is to introduce regulations and create more awareness in media and influential circles to encourage women to keep their surname and not change it on the grounds of marriage.

While it's ok to have rules that allow people to change their names freely, marriage should not be one of them. Yes, there are many men and women breaking away from the stereotype of changing surname at the time of marriage, it's still quite a common, acceptable and expected thing to do, for and from a woman, to change her surname.

Marriage is the joining of two individuals who complement each other. However, in almost all cases it's only the woman who takes up the husband's surname. It's time this practice stops in a formal way with more awareness and education that women should retain their surnames and not change it when they get married.

In addition, in most cases, the children are provided with the father's surname despite the efforts put in by the mother to bear the child, bring them into the world and being the primary carer.

This petition is ALSO to encourage GOVERNMENTS TO INTRODUCE REGULATIONS to provide both the surnames, of the Mother & Father, to every child instead of just the father's surname.

This is a small BIG thing that will help to secure the individual identities of the future girl child and also help the future boy child understand and acknowledge the role of women in society.

To summarise this petition is to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Every Country to introduce regulations to

1. Encourage women to retain their surname when they get married

2. Provide Mother & Father's surname to every child instead of just the Father's surname.
