Why this petition matters

Started by J Read

For many baseball fans, nothing says summer like listening to a game on the radio.  Baseball's pace and timeless feel are a perfect match for the slower, storytelling of radio play by play.  The Toronto Blue Jays, in particular, have an incredible history of a radio broadcasts that is intertwined with the history of the team itself.  Radio play by play men Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth are legendary figures in the history of the team.

That's why Sportsnet's recent decision to eliminate the radio broadcast for 2021 and replace it with a simulcast of the TV broadcast is so upsetting for fans. For one thing, games are called completely differently on television - this will result in a far worse product for those who enjoy the games on radio.  That's probably why no other team in baseball does a simulcast this way. It's terrible for fans, and it's incredibly amateurish for a major league baseball team.

Rogers claims this decision was made for Covid related reasons, but they did a radio broadcast in 2020 from a studio in Toronto, and there's no reason they couldn't do this again. It is also worrying that Rogers might use this as a precedent to eliminate radio broadcasts entirely in the future.

Rogers - we are asking you to reconsider you decision and bring back a dedicated radio play by play broadcast for the Toronto Blue Jays, just like the other 29 teams in baseball have.  You are taking away something very dear to your fans, and we want you to reverse course on this.
