If 300,000 people will commit to a 1-year subscription to CBS All Access, it should recoup the total cost of an HD Remasters of both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

The HD remaster of Star Trek: The Next Generation is beautiful, better than anyone thought possible. But it was an expensive project and did not recoup its costs. This is because the full quality, 1080p version was only released on Blu-ray, and so it was entirely dependent on Blu-ray sales. Blu-rays have become all but obsolete, being purchased only by enthusiasts. Most people opt for streaming. And while the remastered version is now streaming on Netflix and Hulu, it has been downscaled to 720p.

In order to recoup the costs, I propose that Paramount and CBS move all Star Trek series to CBS All Access exclusively once their agreements with Netflix and Hulu have been fulfilled. Most Star Trek fans have not found Star Trek: Discovery and Picard to be enough to sign up for All Access subscriptions. I believe that if all previous series were only available on All Access and in full HD quality, a large segment of those fans would find that incentive enough to subscribe.

So how many subscribers would it take to recoup the costs of a DS9 and VOY remaster in the same way TNG was done? According to those who worked on the TNG project, the cost came out to about $70,000 per episode. There are 176 episodes of DS9, and 172 episodes of VOY, for a total of 348 episodes. This would come out to a total cost of about $24,360,000. A base CBS All Access subscription is about $7 a month, or $84 a year. So it would take about 290,000 year-long subscribers to recoup the cost.

CBS All Access had about 11 million subscribers at the end of 2019, and is projected to gain 5 million more by the end of 2020. If 300,000 people will commit to a 1 year subscription to CBS All Access by signing this petition, it should recoup the total cost. Let's show CBS and Paramount that this is worth it!
