Save the Smoke Bluffs - Do Not Sell the FMC Smoke Bluffs Lands
Save the Smoke Bluffs - Do Not Sell the FMC Smoke Bluffs Lands
Why this petition matters
The Smoke Bluffs is Canada's most popular Rock Climbing area.
The Federation of Mountain Clubs (FMC) is currently in negotiations with the District of Squamish to sell the FMC Smoke Bluffs Land Parcels. Selling the lands is unacceptable for the following reasons (and many others):
1. Selling the land parcels is in contradiction to the historic donors' and volunteers' intentions.
2. Selling the lands would result in an irreversible loss of leverage and protections. There is no way to prevent the District from using the land for other purposes. Not even restrictive covenants.
3. Lack of Transparency. The FMC has failed to communicate with the public and its member clubs its intensions, actions and the state of negotiations. The FMC also refuses to state how it will use any monies raised from the sale of the lands. The FMC is running out of money. Does it intend to betray the climbing community by using the monies to pay its bills, or Executive Director compensation and bonuses?
