Why this petition matters

Started by Owen Edwards

The Wheatsheaf in Oxford has had a planning application to convert the top two floors into student accommodation. Thus ending live music and entertainment at the venue forever. We have the opportunity to oppose and fight the application. Hopefully with enough opposition, the council will not approve the move and our amazing venue can stay open for many years to come.

  • FOR OVER 20 YEARS THE WHEATSHEAF HAS BEEN PROMOTING LIVE MUSIC IN OXFORD

The Wheatsheaf has been serving the local music scene for over 20 years under the stewardship of Joal Shearing. Rising stars and famous names alike have graced its stage over the years. Foals, Black Candy, Hot Chip, Jamie Cullum, John Otway and Stornoway are just a tiny selection of the bigger artists. It has been also a regular yearly fixture for the Nightshift Oxford Punt where new and upcoming bands can showcase their music. It is also home to the award winning Spin Jazz Club (Thurs) which is recognised worldwide.

  • THE WHEATSHEAF IS THE LAST LIVE MUSIC VENUE OF ITS KIND IN OXFORD CITY CENTRE

Following the closures in recent years of much loved venues in and around Oxford like The Cellar in 2019, just The Wheatsheaf remains as the last live music venue for artists and bands to perform live in the city centre.

  • THE WHEATSHEAF IS MORE THAN A LIVE MUSIC VENUE

It is not just a fixture on Oxfordshire live music scene. It is home to regularly sold out live comedy shows (Mon/Tue), Open mike sessions and all kind of live entertainment.

It is our aim to keep the Wheatsheaf as a performance venue for bands, musicians and all other artists. With enough support this planning application will be either withdrawn or rejected.

Let's get together and keep Wheatsheaf venue open for years to come.

Please join us by signing our petition and make your objection to the proposal at the Oxford City Council website looking up planning application 21/00345/FUL.
