Why this petition matters

The brand new Samsung Tab S7 and S7+ tablets are only scheduled to receive quarterly security patches. This means they may receive a new security patch once every 3 to 4 months. Given the prices of these devices and the ever changing and evolving landscape of security and exploits, this policy is inadequate and inappropriate.

We as consumers would like the Tab S7 and S7+ to receive monthly security patches instead of quarterly security patches. There are several reasons why:

  1. Other Samsung flagship devices, meaning the best Samsung has to offer, receive monthly security patches. They include the Galaxy S Series, such as the S20, S10 and S9; the Note Series, such as the Note 20, Note 10 and Note 9; and the Z Series, such as the Flip and the Fold. Given the Tab S7 and S7+ feature comparable hardware and software to the Note 20 Ultra, as well as command a hefty price tag, they should receive the same treatment in regards to security patches.
  2. Devices competing in the same tablet market as the Tab S7 and S7+ receive monthly security patches. These devices include the Apple iPad and the Microsoft Surface. It would be in Samsung's best interest to maintain the status quo and also offer monthly security patches in order to be competitive and possibly attract more prospective buyers away from those platforms and onto Samsung's.
  3. Security is important. Every day, malicious parties are looking for ways to steal consumers' information, hack into consumers' devices and make life a nightmare for unsuspecting people. Whenever a new exploit is found, one can be certain that these parties will try their best to use it to their advantage. Waiting months on end for the fix that can prevent these attacks leaves Tab S7 and S7+ users vulnerable. A monthly patch would ensure these exploits are fixed as soon as tech companies like Google and Samsung are aware of them and not months down the line.

If you believe your brand new premium tablet deserves better security, please consider signing this petition. If you believe in better security in general, also please consider signing.

The ball is in your court, Samsung. Please do the right thing.
