Why this petition matters

Started by Jessica Lloyd

As an individual diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, I was astonished to find that there is a 'post code lottery' for services that assist those with the same diagnosis.

For those of you wondering what Borderline Personality Disorder is, it is a mental disorder, often caused by a childhood trauma, but there are biosocial models which also contribute.

Borderline Personality Disorder is not only trauma based, but can be caused by neglect, abandonment and emotional invalidation in childhood/teens. These can biologically stunt the development of the Amygdala and hippocampus which govern emotional regulation and impulse control. This is why medication doesn't work and only the comorbidities like depression and anxiety can be medicated. There is no cure, but with the right therapy, it is possible to cope well enough as to not meet the diagnostic criteria any more.

Symptoms of BPD often include self harming, suicidal ideation, attempting suicide, committing suicide, binge drinking, drug abuse, promiscuity, gambling, impulsive spending.

In some areas of the UK people with a diagnosis and/or comorbid diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder could receive primary care from the local mental health team, which is inclusive of weekly one on one meetings with an assigned psychologist, weekly group therapy of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for over 1 year, followed by Trauma therapy for one year.

However, in other areas of the UK, there are simply 'Dialectical Behavioural Therapy skills group' for 15 weeks, followed by Mentalisation Behavioural Therapy for 12 weeks, with no follow up aftercare.

I personally do not feel like this is fair at all, BPD is an incredibly difficult disorder to live with, many people with this diagnosis cannot function as well as they wish. It is debilitating, 10% of adults with a diagnosis of BPD commit suicide.

55 - 58% of adults with BPD self injure themselves.

A study in 2006 suggested that about 1 in 20 people in the UK will have a personality disorder.

If you feel we as the UK should change the way that the NHS treats BPD, increase funding to allow equal treatment regardless of where you live, then please sign this petition!
