For years, community residents and library-goers have supported landmarking the Pacific Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. Let's landmark this library! 

This beautiful building is one of the few remaining historic properties on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. If this structure did not exist, Gowanus, Fort Greene, Boerum Hill, Park Slope, Downtown, and Prospect Heights would lose both the historic fabric on a corridor that is constantly moving away from any connection to the past and a vital resource for a diverse and growing population.

In 1904, at the corner of Pacific Street and 4th Avenue, this “classical and dignified” (according to the New York Tribune) Raymond Almirall building opened to the public as the first Carnegie library in Brooklyn. The Beaux-Arts design features limestone trim, keystones at the arched doorway and windows, and torches and swags to support the cornice. There are other significant Almirall buildings along 4th Avenue: Park Slope's Public Bathhouse #7 (now a Blink) and St. Michael’s Church in Sunset Park with the remarkable beehive-shaped dome seen for miles. 

The Pacific Branch is the closest library to three NYCHA developments: 572 Warren St, Wyckoff Gardens, and most of Gowanus Houses. It is the nearest library to PS 369, PS 38, Khalil Gibran, MS 447, Brooklyn High School of the Arts, PS 77, and others, as well as the busiest transit center in Brooklyn, Atlantic Terminal-Barclays Center.
