As some of you may have heard, Keeper of the Lost Cities, a children's book series by Shannon Messenger, is going to be made into a movie by Disney, directed by Ben Affleck. This has been met with great concern and dismay by many of the fans.

Now, while the fandom freaking out in itself isn't a reason to change the movie or give it to another director, one of the reasons why is cause for concern. In 1993, Ben Affleck, the same director who will be the director of this movie, directed a short film called "I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three-Picture Deal at Disney". Do we really trust this man to make a successful adaption of a book series originally created for an 8-12 audience? While a lot of the fandom is older than the target audience, it does not change the fact that this is still a kid-friendly piece of material, as well as a piece of literature with a fandom full of many LGBTQ+, POC, and female fans, and the movie mentioned above discriminates against all three of these groups in some form. What we are trying to achieve with this is simple. We at least want the movie given to a different director, and at most out of Disney's hands entirely, and given to a different movie studio. This is a book series that has inspired many people over the years and will continue to inspire and touch the hearts of many more in movie form, it deserves the chance to be done right.
