Why this petition matters

Started by Evangelina Ornelas

The problem is the portion of Route 31 that runs through Aurora which is Aurorans refer to as Lake St.

On 3/25/19, 2 families experienced the most horrendous and heartbreaking loss. My 8 year old nephew was killed by a hit and run driver as he crossed the street just a half block down the street.

My dad, nephew and niece were crossing the street at Lake St. and Plum St. to come home after an evening at the park and dinner at Wendy's. It was always their little special outing with Grandpa, one that he has always loved to do, even after a long day of work and it was their first one of the year. He used to do the same outings with my siblings and I as children. What a beautiful day that ended with such tragedy.

The last words I said to Izaiah before he left with his little sister and Grandpa were, "Tie your shoe, dude. Have fun and I love you."

My little dude is no longer here. I'll forever hold onto all of the memories we shared with him. He was my best friend so please hug your loved ones a bit harder and give them an extra kiss today.

We need a pedestrian crosswalk. We need a slow down sign under the curve sign. We need a pedestrian traffic light! We need a few of these crosswalks from Northgate Plaza to West Park Ave on Lake St. We need our little kids and everyone in this neighborhood to be able to cross Lake St. so God willing they are able to make it home, the park to play, to work, or wherever they’re headed to safely. We need change and we need to do it before someone else gets hurt or killed.

I was outside yesterday bringing in a few bouquets that we received for Izaiah so that they wouldn’t get too cold and it brought back a childhood memory for me as I stared towards Lake St.

When my sisters and I were little kids and would our bikes here at this same home, we always had to make a roundabout in this little parking lot before we got too close to Lake St. My parents always told us that “the cars drive too fast right there.”

This has been an issue for far too long. Please help us by reading and spreading awareness.

Thank you all for your continued support and positive thoughts. The love is amazing. Please sign and share. He is smiling down at all of us, so happy. #IzaiahStrong #AuroraStrong

Have a wonderful day! ❤️

Sincerely,

Evangelina and the Ornelas Family
