Why this petition matters

Started by Star Ford

Pledge: I will not participate in autism-related conferences, programs, or other events that do not have meaningful involvement of autistic people.

Meaningful involvement could look like:

  • An autistic person is actively involved in planning as an equal
  • The autistic person represents a majority view of the autistic community
  • A conference has actually autistic speakers

The Autistic community has been marginalized from policies and other things that affect us, and we have the right to an authentic voice in everything related to autism. “Nothing about us without us”.

We invite you to sign and forward to your colleagues and others in the New Mexico world of autism. This pledge was prepared by the Autistic Advisory Council of the NM Autism Society (Jocelyn Maestas, Charene Crowe, and Star Ford; with Rebecca Evanko). Some autistic-led organizations in the state are Divergent Labs and Wilderwood Equine Therapy.
