Why this petition matters

Started by Central Manchester Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale

The Jolly Angler (picture above courtesy of Google street view) in Manchester is a traditional back street pub dating back over 100 years.  It is scheduled to be shutting after Christmas following the sale of the building by brewery Hyde's. The Ducie Street pub, which dates from 1854, is regularly featured in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide and is known for its traditional folk and Irish music nights.

Landlord Ray Reynolds, whose family have run the pub for 34 years, said he and regulars were gutted by the closure but grateful to have a few more months before the shutters come down.  We would like to stop the shutters coming down altogether and save this wonderful, vibrant back street boozer. Continue to hear the traditional Irish folk music, the laughter and chink of pint glasses.  Join in the craic, talk football - whatever colour, music and join in the laughter

This is a popular unique pub, the last of its type in the Centre and frequented by locals,  Camra members, bussiness people, boaters, travellers  through Piccadilly Station, political figures, musicians, actors, tevelvison and cinema stars. The Jolly is a great friendly pub that it is worth fighting for. This is not the first time the Jolly has been threatened. In the late 1990s  locals stood their ground with a great campaign and won. The Brewery say they have sold the building but we believe no planing application has been submitted to the City Council for demolition or change of use.  If and when plans are submitted we believe it would be reasonably easy and the correct thing to do to accommodate the retention of this pub into any new development.
