Pima County officials and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson are planning to house asylum seeking families released from ICE and Border Patrol custody in an "unused" portion of the Pima County juvenile detention center. They believe they can “repurpose” an active jail facility into a humanitarian shelter. While they continue to argue that this placement is for the highest good, a child jail is a completely inappropriate space to house traumatized families. No amount of renovation, murals, or good will can make a still active detention facility NOT a jail. Let's demand more viable and sustainable solutions to support and house these families than simply reifying the prison industrial complex.
