Why this petition matters

Started by Edward Howard

In the wake of the tragic death of George Floyd, there have been a number of peaceful protests against police brutality and so on in the United States and overseas.

However, there has also been an ugly side to it, mainly the cultural revolution that has been taking place; statues have been toppled by mobs, street names renamed and Churchill hidden behind a wall. This is pandering to a violent mob, of which the British public don't support and never will.

And now they're coming for this as well. While Rhodes was definitely a controversial character, he was far from the worst (defending the rights of black Africans to vote and giving infrastructure to the region of South Africa it didn't previously have) and was a major philanthropist in his day. Characters like Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln, who also have statues had similarly dark sides, so why are they allowed to remain standing, but Rhodes is decried as the worst?

Meanwhile, it represents a major hypocrisy. If Rhodes falls, why is that far worse characters, like Oliver Cromwell and Bobby Sands are protected by the establishment with their statues and murals remaining up? Is celebrating Rhodes worse than doing so of dictators and terrorists?

It's time to stop this ugly cultural revolution in its tracks. This would be the first great step towards some semblance of sanity.
