TL;DR: We demand that the current Attorney General of Ontario, Hon. Doug Downey take the initiative to make the director of the Special Investigations Unit either increase the transparency of the investigation into Regis Korchinski-Paquet's death, or delegate the probe to an outside investigator, so that it remains fair, unbiased and uninfluenced.
 
Regis Korchinski-Paquet was a 29-year-old Toronto resident. She fell to her death from her 24th floor apartment after Toronto Police Service responded to a mental distress call made by her mother. During the call, Regis found herself alone in her apartment with police, and the next thing we know is that she fell to her death. 
 
Regis’s mother and brother, who were present during the call, say that the last thing they heard of the young woman was her pleading: “Mom help. Mom help. Mom help.” This was followed by sounds of a commotion, and then silence.
Details previously unknown to the public were published in a Toronto Sun article on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020. The article, citing unspecified sources, claimed that the young woman barricaded herself on the balcony and fell to her death when she unsuccessfully tried to "vault to a neighbouring balcony”.

Seeing as the two Toronto police officers were the only parties present in the apartment with her at the time, and that details of the investigation are being withheld from the public under the SIU's discretion, it is believed that the leak is a police officer. 

This potentially compromises the legitimacy of the entire investigation, as a leak could allow the Toronto Police Service to utilize the media into shaping the story into a narrative that does not put them at fault. The law PROHIBITS police from commenting on ongoing SIU investigations, and this leak is an egregious attempt at shifting the blame of Regis's death onto any party other than themselves.

Following this, the SIU has asked that the Toronto Police Service take "immediate steps to prevent further releases of information about what occurred inside the apartment”. THIS IS NOT ENOUGH.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is an arm’s length agency of Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General. We call on the current Attorney General of Ontario to make the SIU follow the recommendations of the Korchinski family's lawyer. Knia Singh, the family's lawyer, says that an outside investigator should take over the case, or that the SIU needs to increase transparency and report their findings and evidence to the family, so that they may confer alongside them.
