Why this petition matters

In light of the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, we as a community need to come together and take action against these injustices. We continue to watch the pain of minorities experiencing systemic oppression and racism but still fail to provide a diverse and comprehensive curriculum to address the root cause: a lack of education. Our eurocentric curriculum ignores the perspectives, stories, and history of minority races, sexualities, and religions. Meanwhile we continue to allow blatant hate speech in our halls with little to no consequences. We currently have NO hate speech policy and the district engages our community in conversation, but takes no action. While we understand that the district is meeting the challenge of how to safely return back to in person instruction, it is not an excuse to turn back on progress. In order to return to school safely, the district must meet the moment and address the two viruses damaging our community: COVID-19 and racism.

Change starts here in our own community and we ask you to join us by signing this petition and asking your friends and family to do so as well. By signing this, you are supporting our efforts to diversify our curriculum and implement a zero tolerance policy against hate speech. This should not be our jobs as students - our school district has a responsibility that they need to uphold. Help us make this change and demand our district does better for us ALL.
