Michigan Senate Bill 431 eliminates local control IN ALL ASPECTS with regard to gravel mining. Every citizen in Michigan should be very concerned about a bill like this. Michigan Constitution and the Zoning Enabling Act are very clear in both the law and their intent - that all government decisions should be made at the local level unless otherwise directly specified by the State. Since 1962 the state legislature has respected the will of the people and has kept local issues under local control. This is a big departure from the intent of the constitution and, quite likely, the first of many attempts by special interests to get laws changed to eliminate local control and give that control to big business and special interests.
