In response to a 3.3% tuition increase, and for many students, a $130 increase in their credits per hour, the EMU administration should raise the amount a student can owe on their E-Bill without penalty from $500 to $1,500, prior to the start of the Fall Semester.

While the administration claims that the incoming institutional and federal financial aid will cover the rising costs of attendance, students have logged in to find their projected E-Bill at roughly $2,000 more than the previous year.

Between the increase in tuition, the implementation of block tuition, which punished students who take less than 15 credits a semester (often because of work and other obligations), and the refusal on the part of the administration to waive online fees for the Fall semester, students will need a financial break until the financial aid is administered.

The administration should also work with the Financial Aid Office and Student Government during the upcoming Fall and Winter semesters to allocate the federal COVID relief funds to students who are struggling to afford paying down their E-Bills, to maintain, and hopefully increase student retention.

If the University does not raise the amount owed, many students may choose, or be forced to choose, to not pay their E-Bill at all...
