Why this petition matters

Started by Selene du Ciel

Halloween is an historical holiday celebrated on October 31. LEAVE HALLOWEEN ALONE. Halloween Trick-or-Treating has taken place on October 31 in many places, in various forms for centuries.

There is nothing suggested by the corporations wanting to move HALLOWEEN to a Saturday that cannot be done on October 31st and most should be taking place year-round:

  • Halloween on the 31st of October is the favorite holiday of 51% of millennials and even larger percentages of children and other adults.
  • Some 3,800 Halloween-related injuries each year. Talk to children about safety year-round for every day of their lives, not just one corporate weekend of sales.
  • If 82% of parents don’t use high visibility aids on their costume, corporations need to incorporate reflective tape, glow sticks, finger lights, or light-up accessories into the costumes.
  • Some 63% of children don’t carry a flashlight while they are trick-or-treating. Let the stores and corporations provide them and clip-on lights instead of candy!
  • For any outdoor event, always discuss safety, pre-plan a route, stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks. Crackdown on unsafe drivers.
  • It's estimated that 65% of parents don’t discuss Halloween safety with their children. Talk to kids and offer ways to ensure a fun and safe experience every time they go outside.
  • It's believed that 12% of children, 5 and under, go trick or treating without the supervision of an adult. Many do this with older siblings and family. We don't need more costumes sold to adults to take advantage of some good ol' fashioned family bonding.
