Save Waterloo's Cold War Bunker from Demolition
Save Waterloo's Cold War Bunker from Demolition
Why this petition matters
The Waterloo Bunker Association needs your help! We need to save the historical Cold War fallout shelter located at 3571 King St. E, Kitchener, ON. Plans are in the works for the site and demolition is on the table. This unique historic structure built in 1966 by the same firm who designed the CN Tower in Toronto, ON needs to be saved from demolition and preserved for future generations. These municipal shelters (MEGHQ) designed to protect local members of government from nuclear attack are few and far between, only two others are known to exist in Canada. It would give the region a safe place to keep the government running if the unthinkable happened. They could coordinate rescue efforts and evacuations, along with keeping contact with the rest of Canada. If properly protected and registered with Ontario Heritage, it would be the first and only stand alone municipal shelter able to tell the story in Canada. Let's work together to tell the Waterloo Region that this site is worth saving and restoring. It's important to allow everyone a chance to experience this rare part of local history and national history. There's a Cold War story that can be told within its walls and there's no better place to do it than inside a historical shelter which is an artifact itself. The Waterloo Region will decide its fate sometime in May/June 2021. Let's not lose this important piece of Cold War history.
