Some 8.4 million people in the U.K. are struggling to afford to eat, according to FareShare. That is the equivalent to the population of London! Yet figures estimated by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) show that 1.9 million tonnes of food is wasted in the U.K. grocery supply chain every year.

The #LoveFoodHateWaste campaign is calling upon the U.K. government to create new legislation that would prevent unsold but still edible food from supermarkets and shops from going to waste or landfill. Instead, the food would be donated to food-banks, homeless shelters and other relevant charities or organisations that help those in need.

We urge the government to take our petition into consideration, as more people than ever are turning to food-banks for support (according to the Trussell Trust charity). The Trussell Trust distributed a record number of 823,145 food parcels from April to September in 2019. Unsold, edible food should not be needlessly thrown into Landfill when people are starving and relying on food-banks.
