Franklin County Democratic Party Executive Committee
340 E. Fulton St, Columbus, OH 43215
Executive Committee Members:
I am appreciative of everything this committee does to ensure fair elections that benefit the members of our party and the residents of our county. To further that pursuit of fair elections, I am writing today to request this committee not endorse candidates in the U.S. Congressional primary to be held on March 17, 2020.
Franklin County is a diverse and dynamic place. Our county is filled with exciting voices contributing to our political discourse. As such, our party is fortunate that in many electoral races, we have multiple Democratic candidates who present a range of policy positions that reflect this diversity.
In order to ensure that voters are fully aware of their choices, I believe this committee should not endorse only one Democratic candidate in the primary. Instead, the committee should devote resources to educating the Democratic base about all of their choices. This approach will ensure the electorate is well-informed, increase overall voter turnout, and give every candidate a fair chance to present their policy positions. Furthermore, there is precedent for this approach. In the 2012 primary in Franklin County, this committee did not endorse and allowed the Congressional Democratic candidates running to compete on equal footing.
Our county faces many challenges. Nearly 30% of black residents are living in poverty. An increasing number of people are housing insecure. Pollution is affecting our air quality and keeping children out of school. The times demand consideration of a broad set of ideas to determine how to ensure that everyone in our community can live a stable life.
Sincerely,
Morgan Harper
Candidate for Ohio’s Third U.S. Congressional District
