Why this petition matters

Started by Ryan Stewart

As cinemas across the country reopen, the doors of Runcorn's only Cinema have remained closed. Yesterday, Mike Amesbury MP stated that after discussions with Cineworld he had learned that the company no longer viewed the site as 'viable' due to rental requirements. Losing this cinema would not just be a massive blow for staff members, but also for local businesses and families. Runcorn would suffer from the loss of a great leisure activity. We therefore are petitioning Cineworld, Trident Retail Park and local council leaders to work together and come to a solution to preserve Runcorn's only cinema.

Cineworld Runcorn has personally played a massive role in my life, not just in my work as an employee but also in creating treasured memories with my family as a child. Having been open since the late '90s it has doubtlessly touched many others in the same way.

Many feel that Runcorn has increasingly poor public transport links, and not everybody has a car that they can use to travel to cinemas further away. As a result of this, our cinema has garnered a loyal base of customers and become an important part of the community for schools, senior citizens and people with disabilities.

At the heart of this issue is a small, yet incredibly strong team of staff members at Cineworld Runcorn. The looming threat of redundancy is a terrifying prospect for staff who have worked hard over the years to build relationships with the local community and serve the people of Runcorn. As staff, we know that we can work harder than ever to make our cinema Covid-19 secure and support the development of the site. We hope that you will sign this petition in the hope that we can open our doors again and ensure that Cineworld Runcorn can be a place for families, couples and friends alike to make memories for years to come.
