The main aim of the education is the 'holistic' development of the children. One of the goals of the new National Education Policy is to restore and re-establish ‘Indian-ness’.

Vedic Mathematics is proved to be an important instrument in this ‘rediscovery of India’.

In his recent address on the radio and television programme, Mann Ki Baat, Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi Ji guided a boy, Usman, to study Vedic Mathematics to succeed in competitive exams. He told him that knowledge of Vedic mathematics can help solve mathematical calculations as fast as a computer can. Later, our PM Mr. Modi, discussed about the new National Education Policy (NEP), and emphasised on developing a mathematical thinking and scientific temperament among children.

Before answering such essential concerns, it would be relevant to know what Vedic Mathematics is.

The “Vedic Mathematics” is called so because of its origin from Vedas. To be more specific, it has originated from “Atharva Vedas” the fourth Veda. “Atharva Veda” deals with the branches like Engineering, Mathematics, sculpture, Medicine, and all other sciences with which we are today aware of.

Vedic Mathematics is a collection of Techniques/Sutras to solve mathematical arithmetics in easy and faster way. It consists of 16 Sutras (Formulae) and 13 sub-sutras (Sub Formulae) which can be used for  solving problems involved in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, conics.

This subject was revived largely due to the efforts of Jagadguru Swami Bharathi Krishna Tirtha Ji of Govardhan Peeth, Puri Jaganath (1884-1960).

Preparing Every Child for future…

Every child dreams of becoming successful in life. There are few essential skills that are required to touch the pinnacle in life. Mathematical ability is one such skill. Mathematics is not only associated with academics but it is directly associated to logical and analytical thinking of students. In a recent survey conducted by NAS throughout the country for school students by the Indian government, the average percent of correct answers show a declining trend as we move to the higher classes.

The biggest problem that students face as they progress to higher classes is calculations. As the numbers and calculations become humongous, the mere sight of such mathematical problems sends shivers down the spine of students. Vedic Mathematics can help to sort this problem of students.

Thus, it is imperative that students try to hone their mathematical ability by learning the sutras of Vedic Mathematics so that we can have more “Ramanujans and Shakuntala Devi’s “from our nation.

A Study….

Recently a study was undertaken to study the effect of Vedic Mathematics on achievement in relation to intelligence among adolescents. A sample of 120 students was drawn randomly from class IX studying in two CBSE affiliated schools located in Amritsar. The findings were:

Vedic Mathematics is indeed a wonderful and truly less time consuming technique and should be introduced in school curriculum as is it an easy way to solve mathematical problems with the help of just sixteen sutras and can also help in developing interest in the subject. The school authorities should encourage teachers in using Vedic mathematics as it increases the concentration of students. Teachers should be given training in making the use of Vedic mathematics in their classrooms. In this regard, seminars and workshops may be conducted to provide practical training in using this method.

How students would be benefited

●     It helps to solve mathematical problems 10-15 times faster.

●     It reduces burden.( need to learn tables upto 9 only)

●     It reduces scratch work in mathematics as well as finger counting.

●     Helps increase concentration.

●     It helps in reducing silly mistakes.

The biggest advantage is that even if a student who is average in mathematics can solve tedious problems of calculations in few seconds. The beauty of Vedic Mathematics is that it encourages students to be creative and does not remain limited to the same rigid approach.

Vedic Mathematics is being taught at the school of Economic Sciences, London, St. James School, St. Vedas School, Mary Ward Centre, London, School of Philosophy, Australia and several other institutions in U.S.A., Holland and places. A number of advance countries like U.S.A., Britain, Austria, Germany, France, Sweedon etc. have been introduced upto 10+2 school level courses so why not in INDIA ?

I would be highly grateful if our  Governments both at central & state level understanding the importance of Vedic Mathematics implement this in their curriculum to make a better foundation of students.
