The Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee has announced it will allow the Rising Sun flag to be flown at the 2020 Olympics.

The modern usage of this flag dates back to the 20th century Japanese Empire's military, which was responsible for the slaughter of millions of innocents, and the destruction and theft of countless priceless artifacts across much of Asia during the 20th century.  Today it is regarded by Japan's neighbors much the same way Germany's neighbors today perceive the swastika flag of Nazi Germany.

Can you imagine the Nazi swastika proudly fluttering from ships' masts, or held aloft in city streets at patriotic events?  That's what it's like when millions of Asian people see the Rising Sun flag.  But unlike Germany, which has banned the Nazi flag and made it illegal to deny the Holocaust, Japan has never made a clean break with its ugly past;  this is because many of its modern politicians, direct descendants of the WWII-era officials, many of whom were convicted as war criminals and executed, just don't want to.

Japan still continues to deny or minimalize the atrocities it has perpetrated under the Rising Sun flag -- for example the Nanjing Massacre of hundreds of thousands; the live human medical experiments of Unit 731; and the forced sexual slavery of the euphemistically called Comfort Women -- and pretends to be a well-meaning victim of malicious outside forces.  Please help to eliminate this ugly symbol of racism and colonialist greed from the public sphere for good!
