We admire the wonderful work you have done to facilitate the implementation of Pope’s Francis Encyclical calls. It is such an inspiring tool for the people who want to respond to integral ecology challenges. 

Going through the content of your Action Platform, we noticed that you are not mentioning topics concerning the welfare of animals, a question that should be seen as a shame in our consumption driven civilization.

Animal welfare is not included either in the Plans section, or in the Overview of goals of the Platform.   Word “animals” does not appear, at all. Are they to remain hidden, as always, under the general word “creation”?

We represent a growing number of Catholics all over the world, who are waiting for strong actions towards improving the relationship between humans and animals. Actions are needed to show that our catholic community can lead the way towards the necessary change in this respect.

Animals - God’s creatures, so important co-habitants of our earthly home, are nowadays among the most harmed part of Creation on Earth. Many of them are mistreated, used as objects or production machines and forgotten. Animals are so rarely present in our everyday moral reflection.  Their sufferings and cries for mercy are still not being noticed or heard by so many of us, Christians.

Laudato Si’ Action Platform has the potential to become an important tool for changing the way we treat animals. It gives us a chance to show how to mend the human-animal relations, so they are in line with the modern scientific knowledge, understanding of the Gospel, conscience given to us by God and resulting compassion for the poorest creatures.

We can show that also in the area of human-animal relations, ruling the Earth does not mean using, harming and destroying, but looking after and caring. In our opinion, this is an important part of Pope Francis’s message that is worth spreading and implementing.

Pope Francis says in Laudato Si’: “… when our hearts are authentically open to universal communion, this sense of fraternity excludes nothing and no one. It follows that our indifference or cruelty towards fellow creatures of this world sooner or later affects the treatment we mete out to other human beings. We have only one heart, and the same wretchedness which leads us to mistreat an animal will not be long in showing itself in our relationships with other people. Every act of cruelty towards any creature is ‘contrary to human dignity’.”

 

We would like to ask you to take this matter into account in the Platform and to provide examples of the actions we all can take to make sure that the question of animal welfare is addressed according to our current understanding of our duties towards God-created world. It would be a very useful inspiration for us, Christians, who want to work towards God Kingdom’s harmony.

Podziwiamy wspaniałą pracę, jaką wykonaliście, aby ułatwić realizację wezwań encykliki papieża Franciszka. To bardzo inspirujące narzędzie dla ludzi, którzy chcą odpowiedzieć na wyzwania integralnej ekologii.

Przeglądając zawartość Platformy Działania, zauważyliśmy jednak, że nie poruszacie tematów związanych z poprawą życia zwierząt, sprawy, która powinna być wstydem naszej napędzanej konsumpcją cywilizacji. Słowo „zwierzęta” nawet nie pada na Platformie, ani w sekcji Plany, ani w Przeglądzie celów. Czy mają, jak zwykle, pozostać ukryte pod ogólnym terminem „Stworzenie”?

Reprezentujemy rosnącą liczbę katolików na całym świecie, którzy czekają na zdecydowane kroki zmierzające w kierunku naprawy relacji między ludźmi a czującymi zwierzętami. Uważamy, że potrzebne są działania, które pokażą, że nasza katolicka wspólnota może być liderem prowadzącym ludzkość w kierunku koniecznych zmian w tym zakresie.

Zwierzęta - Boże stworzenia, tak ważni współmieszkańcy naszego ziemskiego domu, należą dziś do najbardziej pokrzywdzonych istot na Ziemi. Wiele z nich jest źle traktowanych, wykorzystywanych jak przedmioty, maszyny produkcyjne czy obiekty niepotrzebnych eksperymentów. Zwierzęta są tak rzadko obecne w naszej codziennej moralnej refleksji. Prawie nikt nie słyszy i nie rozumie ich krzyku, jako wołania o miłosierdzie.

Platforma Działań ma szansę stać się ważnym narzędziem zmiany sposobu, w jaki traktujemy zwierzęta. Daje szansę pokazywania jak naprawiać relacje człowiek-zwierzę by były zgodne z obecną naukową wiedzą, współczesnym rozumieniem Ewangelii, danym nam od Boga sumieniem i wynikającym z niego współczuciem dla najbiedniejszych. Możemy pokazać, także w obszarze stosunku człowieka do mniejszych braci, że panowanie nad Ziemią nie oznacza używania, krzywdzenia i niszczenia, ale troskę i opiekę. Naszym zdaniem jest to ważna część przesłania papieża Franciszka, warta rozpowszechnienia i wprowadzenia w życie.

Papież Franciszek w Laudato Si' mówi: "(...) kiedy nasze serca są autentycznie otwarte na powszechną komunię, to poczucie braterstwa nie wyklucza niczego i nikogo. Wynika z tego, że nasza obojętność lub okrucieństwo wobec innych stworzeń tego świata wcześniej czy później odbija się na traktowaniu innych ludzi. Mamy tylko jedno serce i ta sama nędza, która skłania nas do znęcania się nad zwierzęciem, nie będzie się długo ujawniać w naszych stosunkach z innymi ludźmi. Każdy akt okrucieństwa wobec jakiegokolwiek stworzenia jest "sprzeczny z godnością ludzką".

Dlatego chcielibyśmy prosić o uwzględnienie na Platformie tej sprawy i o podanie przykładów możliwych działań, dotyczących tego, co można zrobić, aby kwestie dobrostanu zwierząt były podejmowane zgodnie z aktualnym rozumieniem naszych powinności wobec stworzonego przez Boga świata. Byłaby to bardzo pożyteczna inspiracja dla nas, chrześcijan, którzy chcemy pracować na rzecz harmonii Królestwa Bożego.
