Why this petition matters

Started by Jessica Basa

Hello Lovely People. My name is Jessica, and I am disturbed by what would normally happen in every other state other than Oregon and Louisiana, in regards to our liberty as Americans, fully backed by the Constitution. You would think that if you were on trial for charges that could imprison you for life, the jury must be a hung jury (meaning all 12 jurors must agree whether you are guilty or innocent). That was not the case in Louisiana and Oregon. Still abiding by the laws of the Jim Crow era, people were allowed to be sentenced to life in prison if they had a jury verdict of 10-2, or 11-1. How was this even possible? If 2 or 1 person disagrees someone is guilty, then that is reasonable doubt! But unfortunately, that's just the way things were, until a recent case in Louisiana changed things, and put an end to the racist injustice that the Jim Crow era left behind.

In the case Ramos v. Louisiana, the U.S. Supreme Court held that less-than-unanimous verdicts in state criminal trials violate the Constitution. In November 2018, voters amended the state constitution to require unanimous jury verdicts moving forward, making Oregon the only remaining state to allow non-unanimous juries.

You would think that every person convicted by a non unanimous jury, sitting in a hot and small cell at the Louisiana State Penitentiary (better known as Angola), would have immediate relief, especially during this pandemic. That is far from the truth. A loved one of mine who was convicted on a 10-2 jury verdict for armed robbery remains imprisoned at Angola. He's been there for 18 years. Ask yourselves, should you care? Yes, you should care, because it can happen to any one of us....for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Or maybe even your skin tone plays a crucial role in guilt. I am asking all of you to please sign this petition, so these people that were robbed of their liberty be granted immediate relief. Every signature is a voice, a voice that can make change. Our voice is powerful, so let's give these people who were wrongly deprived of their liberty a voice! It is our duly obligation, as a nation, as a whole, to be a voice for the ones with no voice. I thank you all for the love and support. God Bless you all and please stay safe.
