In 1825, 21 years after Haiti gained its independence from France, the newly freed country was ordered to pay France $21b (today’s worth) to preserve its freedom. France was ready to invade Haiti and enslave the country again if Haiti didn’t give that money. It took Haiti 122 years to finish paying that freedom debt. (Till 1947) Haiti had to cut most of its trees to sell to generate income, sacrifice its infrastructure money, health, and education to pay France.
