Call of the African medical world against malaria
130 African health professionals call to Study Artemisia Herbal Tea, a local and affordable solution to fight malaria.
Malaria is killing us, it is killing our children and it is killing Africa. Every year, 200 million Africans are affected by this disease, that is 92% of cases registered worldwide. Every year, it causes the deaths of 400,00 of our African brothers and sisters. Malaria is killing our future too. It hinders our daily lives, leaves us bed-ridden several days a year, prevents our schoolchildren from learning and our workers from developing our countries.
The number of malaria case is rising again after years of steady decline. The strategies for fighting malaria have reached their limits. The distribution of mosquito nets has been proven effective but is not stopping this scourge. WHO-recommended drugs still function but the explosion of counterfeit drug trafficking makes us fear the worst in Africa, at best, they partially treat us, at worst, they poison us while financially ruining our poorest families. Research for a vaccine continues but remains uncertain.
Faced with this urgency, the only rational course is to complete the arsenal of weapons against malaria. To wait any longer would be criminal. We, African scientists, researchers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and biologists are determined to develop a complementary locally-designed strategy adapted to our continent.
One particularly noteworthy and promising area of research concerns an affordable, readily-available local treatment. It is research on Artemisia annua and Artemisia afra plants. Populations throughout Africa are starting to use these plants, taken in herbal tea, to treat malaria. This clearly demonstrates the eagerness and desire for a local, safe and affordable treatment. It is up to us, scientists, to prove whether it is an effective and safe therapy for all. Due to the urgency of the issue, research projects on clinical efficacy, pharmacology, biology, chemistry and agronomy must be undertaken.
Thanks to the leaders and donors of the Global Fund, the budget allocated to the fight against malaria was renewed again at the Replenishment Conference hosted by Emmanuel Macron at the end of 2019 in France. We are grateful to you. We ask that decision-makers take this opportunity to finance research on Artemisia, a historic opportunity to provide a therapeutic solution adapted to our realities.
The Global Fund can count on us, African scientists and medical professionals, to support you in this vital process, to bring our expertise in the field with the world’s leading institutes, to carry out all necessary research and to win this fight against malaria.
Let us urgently launch research on Artemisia herbal tea, a local and affordable solution to fight malaria.
